Keeping On With It
In the middle of all my “recording the album”, I am constantly reminded of how all I need to do is keep going. I need to try one more take so that I get it right. I need to try one new thing on social media every day to see what works both for me and the band.
I need to keep writing one more day. Put things together one more time. Keep going a little bit further.
As long as I keep going, nobody can stop me.
Nobody has stopped me.
Of course, I think about stopping every day. I worry whether "things are working already". I wonder if there is a shortcut or a better way to do this. I fiddle with things better left alone and have a hard time settling on something.
Until I remind myself of the long game.
Try something for a couple of weeks instead of a few days to see if it will make a difference.
Keep making things to find out what it is you really like making.
Keep tinkering.
Because that's how you find what works.
Isn't it funny, though how "what works" is always the last thing you tried? You can't get to the last thing if you don't get through all the other things first. That much is clear.
All you have to do, then, is make sure that your "trying things out" is sustainable.
You need to make sure you don't do too much at once or lose all your resources.
You can't record more tracks if you are too tired.
You can't write much if you burn that fuse in your mind.
You can't make things with your hand if you give yourself an RSI.
And you can't try new ways to reach an audience if you go broke on your first campaign.
So, keep going. But also keep an eye on your energy and your other resources.
The point isn't to burn bright and then go under.
the point is to "add one" over and over until you have something big on your hands.
